Merriwood In the Revolution
When in the course of human events...
Felicity reads the Declaration of Independence over the shoulder of a Chester Scarecrow.
"Papa! Papa! The first shots have been fired at Lexington and Concord!"
Felicity runs to Papa at the store with the news. The Merrimans are ardent patriots and receive the latest news from Alice's brother, a sea captain sailing out of Salem, Mass. Richard suffered health problems from the French and Indian War, but he does his part, sending money to the troops, sending food from the mercantile, and drilling the militia on the town green.
Albert visits Richard at the store, where they plan ways to help the Rebels. Albert is an informal spy, mixing socially with the Coles and gleaning news of what All The King's Men are up to. They often raise a tankard to freedom. Note the portrait of Paul Revere in the background.
Below, Felicity meets General Washington at the Independence Festival in Exeter, N.H.
Richard, far left, drills the troops on the village green including Fergus McAngus, Squire Albert Livingston and the Rev. Ezekiel Putnam Smith.
Alice, a staunch supporter of Liberty since her early days in Salem, Mass., sews a flag for the new country while Charity plays nearby with her cornhusk doll.
